Really good, really cheap, really chill. All day breakfast or lunch, greasy spoon style with a smile.

My partner and I showed up at the Beacon for a late brunch on a long weekend Monday when little else in Thunder Bay was open. We both agreed we were glad most places opted to stay closed that day because otherwise we wouldn't have broken with routine and would have missed out on this gem entirely.

We grabbed a window booth and were promptly greeted by one the most genuinely sweet servers I've encountered in a while. She gave us menus and ran us through the specials of the day before running off to grab us our coffees.

I opted for a fried egg sandwich with cheese and home fries, and my partner got the buccaneer breakfast (your standard big ole diner breakfast with toast, eggs, home fries, and meat) and we each opted for a single Finnish pancake on the side because hello they are only $1.50 and something sweet with your savoury is such a nice thing.

Our food arrived quickly and was all the things you want from a diner breakfast - crispy home fries, slightly runny fried eggs with crispy edges, Kraft peanut butter packets, and free flowing coffee refills. Plus for all the food and drink we spent like $20 for two people (tax and tip not included).

Apparently this place has been around for like 30 years but recently changed owners and I guess its been less busy since that time. I don't know why because its got all the ingredients for a bumping breakfast/brunch spot. Do yourself a favour and get there before it starts getting busy again.

we were heading here, parked outside and went in.  First thing we noticed is it was not clean at all.  If the public areas are dirty hate to think what the kitchen looks like.  The hotel that it is located in looks like it is closed and totally run down.  We glanced at the menu then decided to go with our instincts and left.  We can not comment on the food as we did not eat here and did not want to try anything.
